Your Michigan Auto Policy – Part 1

51724988

The term PLPD used to be utilized as an acronym for Michigan drivers that stood for public liability and property damage.  However, most agents will tell you that there really is no such thing as PLPD.  You do not simply add liability and property damage.  The minimal amounts of coverage legally required on a vehicle in Michigan is much more than that.

If you have a vehicle registered in the State of Michigan, you are legally required to carry the following coverage’s on that vehicle:

Mandatory Auto Insurance Types Explanation of Coverage
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) PIP is the heart of No-Fault coverage and pays your medical expenses, wage loss and other related expenses if you are injured in an auto-related accident.
Property Protection Insurance PPI covers property damage to buildings and other non-vehicular property, with the exception of parked cars. Parked cars are considered property as opposed to motor vehicles.
Liability for Bodily Injury Provides coverage in the event the insured is at-fault in causing an accident that results in “bodily injury” or death.
Property Damage Liability Provides coverage in the event the insured is at-fault in causing an accident that results in “property damage,” including “injury to or destruction of property of others…”

It is important to note that none of the required insurance coverages provide coverage to fix your car in any type of accident whether you are at fault or not. To cover your vehicle in an auto accident, talk to your agent about adding the optional coverage such as collision, comprehensive, towing & rental reimbursement!
