Michigan’s NEW no-fault law

Beginning in June 11, 2019 historic changes were made to Michigan’s No-Fault Insurance Laws which has impacted all Michigan policyholders.

One of the biggest changes is how coverage for Personal Injury Protection benefits works.  Under the new Michigan law, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage will only apply to the following people:

  • You
  • Named Insured/Spouse
  • Any relatives who live with you

*It is important to note that Personal Injury Protection benefit changes prior to July 2, 2020 are company specific – to see if your policy has been affected prior to the July 2, 2020 effective date please contact your local independent agent.

The next phase of changes come into effect on July 2, 2020.  Previously, it was mandatory for drivers to carry unlimited Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits, but starting July 2, 2020 drivers will be able to choose from five different options:

  • Unlimited PIP coverage
  • $500,000 limit
  • 250,000 limit
  • 50,000 limit
  • Opt-out of PIP coverage entirely

Each of these options carry their own benefits and requirements.  In addition signature forms may be required at renewal time based on your selection.  Frankenmuth Insurance has established a Michigan No-Fault page, full of helpful information and tools that may help you navigate Michigan’s new no-fault law.  We will continue to update you as information becomes available to us.  In the meantime, please do not to hesitate to contact us or your service agent directly, Staff Directory.
